Question: How do we help people know that they belong at FPC?
Our six-week learning and discussion series exploring Belonging will begin on Wednesday, May 3, 7-9 pm, in the Parish House with a showing of the one-hour film, Out of Order.
Out of Order is a groundbreaking feature documentary revealing the complex and painful struggles faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer faith leaders within the Presbyterian Church, USA. The film draws timely attention to the joyful experiences and struggles of these gifted faith leaders. The film offers greater awareness and understanding of bisexuality and the growing visibility of transgender individuals, while offering a unique perspective on a trans person of faith.
As our congregation is beginning to consider incorporating inclusive practices, this documentary will help put names and faces to the individuals who are made to feel unwelcome by exclusionary practices. By watching and discussing the film with a group, we hope you will not only learn from the individuals in the film, but also with and from one another. The participants in the film hope that by sharing their very personal, and sometimes painful, experiences, others may deepen their empathy for LGBTQIA+ people in the church, and for all those who’ve been told they do not belong in church.
We will take a brief break for refreshments after showing the film, and then our discussion will be carefully facilitated to create a safe space, including a time for Q & A. We hope you will join us to learn more about what it means to truly belong!
